Varitector SSC - Surge Protection in a Terminal Block
March 25 2015
The surge protection family VARITECTOR SSC for instrumentation and control (I&C) circuits has been developed in the compact design of a modular terminal block with a width of only 6.2 mm.
This new surge protection family offers comprehensive protection for instrumentation and control technology. It is essential to protect interfaces of I&C systems against overvoltage because signal inputs can be interfered with or even be destroyed by the entry of overvoltage via cables. The user has to provide protection for I&C devices in their immediate vicinity. The surge protection family VARITECTOR SSC is highly suitable for this purpose. The protective circuitry has been adapted to loops as well as to binary signals.
Providing more than 100 variants, the VARITECTOR SSC family is well-set and offers perfectly fitting solutions for any case of surge protection, including loops and binary signals for 5V, 12V, 24V, 48V and 60V. Complete protective circuitry, respectively individual modules – e.g. varistors - are integrated in the modular terminal blocks. The terminal block variant offers numerous advantages to the customer: The “handling”, well known from terminals, the safe and reliable connection of the conductor as well as an ample range of accessories for modular terminal blocks, including marking systems. The essential advantage: The protection against overvoltage is immediately effective upon connection, respectively snapping onto the rail. VARITECTOR SSC combines two features – connecting and protecting. Furthermore, the surge protection in form of a modular terminal block requires minor space on the connection level with a width of only 6.2 mm.
Connection of the conductor is comfortable: Conductors of 0.5 up to 6 mm² are connected vibration-proof with a Torx slotted screw, 0.8 Nm locking torque.
The reliable diverting of overvoltage up to 20 kA (8/20 μs) is obtained by contact with the mounting rail. The installation is easy: Simply snapping the VARITECTOR SSC onto an earthed mounting rail– finished. The PE-connector contacts directly and guarantees excellent discharge of overvoltage for several years.
For precise identification, all VARITECTOR SSC modules have extensive space for marking: Labelling of device and individual connections, as well as coloured marking of the voltage levels for quick identification in the control cabinet, thus facilitating service and initiation.
All VARITECTOR SSC products have been tested according to current standards (IEC61643-21): They fulfill the safe short circuit mode classes D1, C1 and C2 for cases of overload by alternating current. In the future the product line will be supplemented by products for ATEX-tested applications in intrinsically safe electric circuits.
